📜 SUGYA MAP — STRUCTURE LAYER

What is the Sugya Map?

The Talmud is not a straight narrative — it is a structured argument. Every passage (a sugya) contains layers of ruling, debate, objection, resolution, source citation, and commentary. The Sugya Map colors each segment by its logical role in that argument, so you can see the structure of a discussion at a glance — even before you understand the words.

Every passage has a structure

A sugya moves through a pattern: a ruling is stated, challenged, defended, a source is cited, an objection is raised, the objection is resolved. The Sugya Map makes this skeleton visible.

Color = logical role

Each segment is assigned a color based on what it does in the argument — not what it says. A red bar means "this is an objection." A teal bar means "this is a source citation." You don't need to read Hebrew to follow the shape.

The 6 Sugya Roles — Learn to Recognize Each One

RULING

A legal decision or normative statement

The Talmud's answer to a question, or a rabbi's authoritative position. This is what you're studying — the ruling is the point the passage is building toward.

Example pattern:

"The Sages ruled that…" / "It is forbidden to…" / "One who does X is liable…"

DEBATE

A dispute between opinions or authorities

Two or more rabbis disagree. The Talmud often records both positions without resolving them — the debate itself is the teaching. Look for named sages arguing directly.

Example pattern:

"Rabbi X says… but Rabbi Y says…" / "Beit Shammai rules X; Beit Hillel rules Y"

OBJECTION

A challenge to a ruling or prior statement

Someone pushes back. "But if that's true, then what about this case?" Objections drive Talmudic argument — the text never lets a ruling stand unchallenged without considering the hard cases.

Example pattern:

"But isn't it taught that…?" / "They raised an objection…" / "Come and hear a contradiction"

RESOLUTION

An answer to an objection or contradiction

After an objection is raised, a resolution is offered. This might be a distinction ("that case is different because…"), a reinterpretation, or a concession. Green means the argument is being resolved.

Example pattern:

"No, there it is different…" / "We can say that the case refers to…" / "Rather, interpret it as…"

SOURCE

A citation from Scripture, Mishnah, or Baraita

The Talmud constantly cites prior texts to support or challenge a position. Teal marks a direct quotation — a verse from Torah, a ruling from the Mishnah, or a Tannaitic tradition (Baraita).

Example pattern:

"As it is written…" / "It was taught in a Baraita…" / "We learned in the Mishnah…"

COMMENTARY

Explanation, elaboration, or narrative aside

Not every line is argument. Some passages explain context, give biographical detail, or tell a story. Purple marks explanatory material that illuminates the argument without being a direct move in it.

Example pattern:

"It happened that…" / "This teaches us that…" / "What is the reason?" / narrative anecdote

📋 How to Read a Passage with Sugya Map

Start with the colors — before reading a word, scan the color bars on the left margin. What's the shape of the argument? Lots of red/green alternation = heavy debate. Mostly gold = a sequence of rulings. Lots of teal = heavily sourced.
Find the ruling (gold) — this is the main point. Every other color is in service of establishing, challenging, or explaining it.
Follow the objection/resolution pairs (red → green) — each objection raised should be resolved. If it's not, note it — unresolved objections are significant in Talmudic law.
Read the sources (teal) — what is the ruling based on? Which prior texts is the argument drawing from?
Use commentary (purple) for context — purple sections often explain who is speaking, what happened, or why this question matters. They're background, not argument.
