Living Can Contradict the Dead

When the shield-bearers entered the study hall,
Yehoshua stood up.
| Student | Is the evening prayer optional or cumpulsory? |
| Gamliel | It is compulsory. And is there
anyone who disputes this ruling? |
| Yehoshua | No. |
| Gamliel | But I heard you say it was optional! So stand up on your feet and slet them testify against you. |
Yehoshua stood up.
| Yehoshua | Were I alive and he dead, I would
be unable to deny what i said. For the living are able to contradict the dead. Now, however that he is alive and I am alive How can the living contradict the living? So I am forced to confess that I made that ruling. |
