Passage Content

Hanna Take not your maidservant to be
a base woman [bas bliyaal]
From here we learn concerning a drunkard
who prays that it is as if he worships idols.
Linking to another verse:
2) Lawless men [bnei bliyaal]
have emerged in their midst
Men Let us go and worship
the gods of others
From these 2 verses we see that base woman means idol worship.
Rashba explains: Intoxication confuses the thinking process to
the extent that it can lead to denial of truth and affirmation.
It also disturbs the imagination, creating false images.
Thus, one who stands before God in prayer while drunk may, as a
result of his mental confusion, conjure up false images of God.
This is the very idea behind idolatry.
