| Yochanan: | Why are you crying?
(1) Are you crying becausue you did not accumulate as much Torah knowledge as you wanted? But we learned with regard to sacrifices: Both the offering of one who gives much and the offering of one who gives little are equally pleasing to God, provided he directs his Heart to Heaven. Accordingly, even though you did not learn as much as you would have liked, since your intentions were pure, there is no reason to cry. (2) Are you crying because of a lack of food (i.e. your dire financial situation)? that too is no reason to cry, because not everyone merits two tables. (3) Are you crying crying because of your children who died, this is the bone of the tenth son that I lost. |
